Circulation Department

New items list!

WHAT IS CIRCULATION?

Circulation is checking items out to patrons and reshelving them upon return, but that's only part of the story.  The Circulation Department is also responsible for issuing library cards, filling holds, and routing books from one branch to another.  In other words, if it helps you get library materials into your home, Circulation does it!

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A STANDARD SHREVE MEMORIAL LIBRARY CARD?

You are eligible for a free Shreve Memorial Library card if you do one of the following things in Caddo Parish:

1) Reside
2) Work
3) Go to school
4) Own property

OR

if you are military personnel attached to Barksdale Air Force Base

OR

if your spouse, sibling, child, or parent fits one of the criteria above AND holds a Shreve Memorial Library card in good standing.

ARE THERE OTHER TYPES OF SHREVE MEMORIAL LIBRARY CARDS?

Yes.  Adult cardholders from Bienville, Bossier, Claiborne, DeSoto, Grant, Lincoln, Natchitoches, Sabine, Webster, or Winn parish may participate in the GreenGold system.  Once you have obtained a GreenGold card from your home library, you can bring it to Shreve Memorial and we will issue you a card with limited borrowing privileges.

If you're not eligible for one of our free cards, you may purchase a temporary card, with limited borrowing privileges for one year, for $20.00.

WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS TYPES OF BORROWING PRIVILEGES?

Children aged 10 and under are issued a Juvenile card, which allows them to borrow Juvenile printed and audio-visual materials.

Young adults aged 11-17 are issued a YA card, which allows them to borrow Juvenile and Young Adult visual materials, and all printed and audio materials.

Adults over 18 are issued an adult card, which allows them to borrow any circulating item.

WHAT DO I NEED TO HAVE TO APPLY FOR A LIBRARY CARD?

New adult applicants for library cards need to prove their identity and current address with proper identification.  If your driver's license or state ID does not have current information, you will need to provide two forms of ID that are correct, such as a utility bill and a voter's registration.

Except during special library promotions, children may not apply for library cards on their own.  An adult holding a valid Shreve Memorial Library card in good standing must take responsibility for the child's borrowing privileges.

WHAT DO I DO IF I LOSE MY LIBRARY CARD?

Please notify the library right away if you lose your card, even if you do not intend to replace it, as you will be held responsible for any items borrowed up to the time the card is reported lost or stolen.  If you find your card again after reporting it lost, it will no longer be honored, so please destroy it.

If you do wish to obtain a new Shreve Memorial Library card, you will need to fill out a new registration and present your ID again.  Plus, there will be a $1.00 fee for your replacement card.

HOW MANY ITEMS CAN I BORROW?

You can borrow up to 20 items total.  Within this limitation, you may borrow up to 3 of each visual item type (DVD-11 is a visual item type) and 5 of each audio item type (CD-J is an audio item type).  There is no limitation on printed materials aside from the 20 items total.

HOW LONG CAN I KEEP MY LIBRARY ITEMS?

Printed and audio materials circulate for 2 weeks.  Visual media, such as videos and DVDs, circulate for three days.  All items can be renewed for 2 additional circulating periods if they do not have holds.  Items with holds must be returned on the original due date, or they will incur fines.
