The Secret Ingredient, by Stewart Lewis, is an extraordinary book about the troubles of growing up and into who you are over the course of an exciting Summer. Olivia isn’t your average girl. She sticks to the simpler things in life and this story follows her through her first love, the search for her birth mother, and her love for food and cooking. She lives with her two dads who own a struggling restaurant called FOOD. She and her brother both try and earn money in order to help save the struggling restaurant. Olivia tries to earn money through a casting agency, despite her disdain for the glamour of Hollywood, and her brother by buying an ice cream truck. After finding an old cookbook with notes from the previous owner Olivia is led to insights about herself and she also learns that sometimes food is the one thing that can bring everyone back together.
This book kept a good pace and while it does take you on a few ups and downs it isn’t going to have you laughing hysterically one minute and sobbing the next. If you are looking for a good calming read I would recommend this book. 8/10
