The Secret Ingredient by Stewart Lewis

The Secret Ingredient, by Stewart Lewis, is an extraordinary book about the troubles of growing up and into who you are over the course of an exciting Summer. Olivia isn’t your average girl. She sticks to the simpler things in life and this story follows her through her first love, the search for her birth mother, and her love for food and cooking. She lives with her two dads who own a struggling restaurant called FOOD. She and her brother both try and earn money in order to help save the struggling restaurant. Olivia tries to earn money through a casting agency, despite her disdain for the glamour of Hollywood, and her brother by buying an ice cream truck. After finding an old cookbook with notes from the previous owner Olivia is led to insights about herself and she also learns that sometimes food is the one thing that can bring everyone back together.

This book kept a good pace and while it does take you on a few ups and downs it isn’t going to have you laughing hysterically one minute and sobbing the next. If you are looking for a good calming read I would recommend this book. 8/10

Hunger Games

The Hunger Games is the first book of a Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. It is based on an post-apocalyptic world and North America is no more as we know it. A new nation named Panem has formed and is divided into 12 districts with a capital. Each year, two "tributes" from ages 12-18, boy and girl from each district competes in "The Hunger Games" which is a fight to the death. This is punishment for the rebellion that destroyed the 13th district. The main character, 16 year old Katniss takes the place of her little sister in the hunger games. Peeta Mellark, a boy who once gave Katniss bread when her family was starving, also was selected to compete from District 12.  This is all I will say, you  will have to read the book to find out more. This book contains violence and strong emotions. The plot is excellent and it was what kept me reading all night. This book has many discusion points, but it also is about being true to yourself and not submiting to society's expectations.
