MLA Showcase: Star Wars in South America: Galactic Rebellion under the Pinochet Military Dictatorship

Monday, April 29, 2019

Dr Cannon is the Bruce and Steve Simon Professor of Language and Literature and Assistant Professor of Spanish at Louisiana State University Shreveport. A former alumnus of LSUS, he earned his PhD in Iberian and Latin American Literatures and Cultures at the University of Texas at Austin. His research explores representations of economic and political violence in Latin American comics and graphic novels.

The 1977 release of Star Wars in Chile happened during the violent military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, and the film's story of small rebel groups fighting against Darth Vader and the Empire resonated with the real life resistance that struggled against Pinochet's regime. This talk will explore how "Guerra de las Galaxias" (Star Wars in Spanish) was received in Chile and how the political context of the era shaped its reception till today.
