"West with Giraffes" Named 2022 SML One Book One Parish Title

Shreve Memorial Library asked, and patrons voted West with Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge the 2022 One Book One Parish title. Each year, Shreve Memorial Library’s One Book One Parish campaign unites Caddo Parish by promoting one book title throughout the month of October. Patrons were given an opportunity to choose one of three titles to be named this year’s One Book One Parish winner. West with Giraffes received 70 votes and narrowly beat out The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid (68 votes) and There There by Tommy Orange (60 votes) for the One Book One Parish honor.

West with Giraffes is an emotional, rousing novel inspired by the incredible true story of two giraffes who made headlines and won the hearts of Depression-era America. With an eccentric cast of characters, some real and some fictional, West with Giraffes tells the story of Woodrow Wilson Nickel’s 12-day journey to deliver Southern California’s first giraffes to the San Diego Zoo. It is part adventure, part historical saga and part coming-of-age love story. A complete summary of the book is included below, and copies of West with Giraffes are available for checkout at Shreve Memorial Library branches.

Programming for One Book One Parish takes place throughout the month of October. One Book One Parish encourages adults to read and join a parish-wide conversation about the selected title each year. Special programing related to West with Giraffes will include book club discussions, special displays in branches, guest speakers, crafts and paint programs, and additional interactive programs addressing various themes presented in the book.
