Shreve Memorial Library Celebrates National Comic Book Week 2022

Shreve Memorial Library joins readers, collectors, comic book lovers, and fans across the U. S. in celebration of National Comic Book Day! Various programs and activities for children and teens will take place at Shreve Memorial Library branches throughout Caddo Parish beginning Saturday, September 17 through Friday, September 30. All activities and materials are free. Children and teens are encouraged to participate.

The celebration kicks off with Comic Book-making programs for children and teens. Participants are encouraged to fire up their imaginations and create their own comic books. The programs take place at the following branches at the designated times and dates: 

  • Monday, September 19 at 4:30 p.m. (children) & Friday, September 23 at 4:00 p.m. (teens) at Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch, 2105 Hollywood Avenue.
  • Tuesday & Wednesday, September 20 and 21 at 11:00 a.m. (children) at Wallette Branch, 363 Hearne Avenue.
  • Monday, September 26  through Thursday, September 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (all ages) Oil City Branch, 102 Allen Street, Oil City

The fun continues with craft programs. Children and teens will create comic book-cover collages, paint superhero masks, and make custom buttons, wreaths, and more. The programs take place as follows:

  • Tuesday, September 20 at 4:30 p.m. Comic Cover Collage at Mooretown Branch, 4360 Hollywood Avenue
  • Tuesday, September 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Custom Buttons (all ages) North Shreveport Branch, 4844 North Market Street
  • Wednesday, September 21, at 4:30 p.m. Comic Covers Collage at Atkins Branch, 3704 Greenwood Road
  • Wednesday, September 21, at 4:30 p.m. Super Hero Mask Craft  (children) at West Shreveport Branch, 4380 Pines Road
  • Friday, September 23, at 3:30 p.m. Superman Craft (children) at Hamilton/ South Caddo Branch, 2111 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop
  • Tuesday, September 27 (children), & Wednesday, September 28 (teens) at 3:30 p.m. Comic Book Wreath Craft Rodessa Branch, 10093 Main Street in Rodessa
  • Friday, September 30, at 3:30 p.m. (all ages) Super Hero Craft at Belcher-Wyche Branch 409 Charles Street in Belcher

Children and teens will celebrate National Comic Book Day with a variety of games. Activities will take place at the following branches.

  • Wednesday, September 21, at 4:30 p.m. Superhero-themed Carnival Games (children) at Broadmoor Branch, 1212 Captain Shreve Drive
  • Wednesday, September 21, at 4:00 p.m.  Sonic the Hedgehog Edition (teens) at David Raines Branch, 2855 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive
  • Friday, September 23, at 4:00 p.m. Wii Games (teens) at Wallette Branch 363 Hearne Avenue 

What is National Comic Book Week without superhero movies? Movie showings will take place at several library branches. They are as follows:

  • Wednesday, September 21 at 4:30 p.m. (teens) Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse & Thursday, September 22, 4:00 p.m. (children) LEGO Batman at Cedar Grove – Line Avenue, 8303 Line Avenue (popcorn served)
  • Thursday, September 22, at 4:00 p.m. Black Panther & Saturday, September 24, at 3:00 p.m. Spider-Man Man: Far from Home at West Shreveport Branch, 4380 Pines Road. 

Other programs celebrating National Comic Book Week will take on the following dates:

The Broadmoor Branch will host “Batman Day” on Saturday, September 17, before the kick-off of the weeklong festivities. Children and their caregivers will hear stories about the famous caped crusader as they celebrate the Dark Knight. The program takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the meeting room at the branch. Also on Tuesday, September 20, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. teens will participate in Comic-con. Attendees will dress up in their favorite comic book costumes, test their trivia knowledge of comics, and make “Most Wanted” villain posters. Broadmoor Branch is located at 1212 Captain Shreve Drive.

On Friday, September 23, Hamilton/ South Caddo Branch will also host teens and a special guest from the local comic book shop Excalibur. Comic books from Excalibur will be on display and a discussion about the different collections of comic books will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Teens are encouraged to gather in the meeting room at the branch at 2111 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop.

Then on Monday, September 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Higginbotham-Bryson Branch invites children and teens to visit the branch to read and check out comic books and graphic novels. The branch is located at 9359 Greenwood Road in
Greenwood.

West Shreveport Branch is also inviting children and teens to drop in during the month, and participate in a scavenger hunt and color coloring sheets during branch hours in celebration of National Comic Book Week. The branch is located at 4380 Pines Road. Branch hours are Monday through Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
