This September, we are joining with the American Library Association and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-Up Month to encourage parents, caregivers and students to obtain a free library card that will save them money while reaping rewards in lifelong learning. This year, Disney’s The Incredibles are Library Card Sign-Up Month honorary chairs, helping to promote the value of a library card and bring attention to the many ways libraries and librarians transform lives and communities through education.
Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Whether it’s providing free access to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) programs, educational apps, in-person and virtual homework help or technology workshops, a library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies.
Having a library card not only allows patrons to check out books, DVDs, and materials from our branches, but it also allows them access to digital resources and online databases, including the library’s newest resource, Lynda.com.
Lynda.com, an online learning site featuring thousands of instructional videos, is just one of the many digital resources available with your library card. Resources such as Overdrive (and their new app Libby) provide access to e-books audiobooks. Flipster allows patrons to flip through their favorite magazines, and using Hoopla, patrons can borrow movies, TV shows, music, audiobooks, comics and e-books. In addition, library card holders also have access to the Louisiana State Library Databases that include Homework Louisiana and genealogy resources.
Throughout September, the public is invited to visit any of our 21 branches and sign up for a library card. Library cards are free of charge and available to all those who live, work, go to school and own property in Caddo Parish.
During September, patrons who have lost or misplaced their Shreve Memorial Library card will be able to replace them free of charge. In addition, parents and caregivers will be able to sign their children up for a Shreve Memorial Library card, even if the parent’s account is blocked due to overdue fines and fees. Overdue fines and fees will not be waived.
Since 1987, Library Card Sign-Up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries unite together in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card.
