October is Family History Month, and our Genealogy Department has a number of great events scheduled for you to find out more about your ancestors and local history. Learn how to trace your roots with DNA, find out about the earliest houses in Highland, and join us for a dedication ceremony as we name the genealogy collection in honor of Juanita Ryland Rembert.
Family History Month is the perfect time to visit our Genealogy Department at our Broadmoor Branch and find out all the resources they have available to help you uncover your past. Our friendly staff can help you search through specialized resources and online databases, including Ancestry, Fold3, and MyHeritage. The staff also hosts regular classes on beginner’s genealogy, vital records, land records, and using the library’s online resources.
We also have some special events planned this month at our Genealogy Department. On Monday, October 29 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., we will dedicate our Genealogy Collection and name it in honor of Juanita Ryland Rembert.
She served Shreve Memorial Library as Genealogy Librarian and as Director in the 1960s and 1970s. During her time at Shreve Memorial she built the genealogical collection into “one of the best in the South.” Join us as we commemorate Ms. Rembert’s wonderful work by formally naming the genealogical collection in her honor.
You will also have a chance to learn about the Free African American Jones Family, as Reed Mathews of the Genealogy Department shares this interesting story of a significant Shreveport family on Thursday, October 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. You can also hear about the earliest houses of the Highland Historic District as well as how to get started finding your family’s history using DNA.
All of the following Family History Month events will be hosted by our Genealogy Department at the Broadmoor Branch of Shreve Memorial Library, located at 1212 Captain Shreve Drive in Shreveport.
