This summer, we are blasting off into a universe of stories and exploring concepts of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). STEAM Maker Camps and Coding Intensives are being offered throughout the summer for children and teens. Each camp will explore a different concept and will be held for one week (Monday through Friday) at various Shreve Memorial Library locations. Space is limited, and registration is required for all camps.
Registration Opens: May 28, 2019
Teens age 11 to 17 will use iPads, Apple pencils, and the Apple Procreate app to create art. Teens will design stickers and buttons, paint a digital galaxy and learn about urban sketching. The Digital Arts Camp will take place Monday, June 10 through Friday, June 14 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Atkins Branch. Children are invited to visit the Broadmoor Branch Monday, June 10 through Friday, June 14 for a Scratch coding intensive. Scratch is a programming language developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab that helps youth learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. With Scratch, children can create interactive video games, stories and animations. The coding intensive will teach children the basic building blocks of computer programming, and will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Registration can be completed by calling the Broadmoor Branch at (318) 869-0120.
Older children and teens are invited to further their coding skills with Python, an interpreted, interactive, object-oriented programming language. Python incorporates modules, exceptions, dynamic typing, very high level dynamic data types, and classes. The Python Coding Intensive will be held Monday, June 24 through Friday, June 28 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Broadmoor Branch. Registration can be completed by calling the Broadmoor Branch at (318) 869-0120.
