Shreve Memorial Library and Sci-Port Discovery Center are partnering to promote early childhood literacy and a love of reading through the development of a children’s library within the Center’s Power of Play (PoP) Children’s Museum. A ribbon-cutting and grand opening for the Children’s Library at PoP will be held on Friday, January 10, at 10:00 a.m. inside PoP on the second floor of Sci-Port Discovery Center at 820 Clyde Fant Parkway. The public and members of the press are invited to attend.
The Children’s Library at PoP features a rotating collection of picture and children’s books provided by Shreve Memorial Library’s Mobile Library, interactive learning tablets, and a reading area. It also features a Parent Resource Center designed to provide parents with information about children’s abilities at different developmental stages as well as general community resources.
“Shreve Memorial Library’s partnership with the Power of Play Children’s Museum and Sci-Port is a natural,” stated John Tuggle, Shreve Memorial Library Executive Director. “All parties want to help children and promote early childhood literacy and lifelong learning, two of the library’s main service priorities. The Children’s Library at PoP is a wonderful opportunity to introduce children and their parents to the library and reading.”
Sci-Port Executive Director Dianne Clark agreed. “The ability to read is a fundamental learning skill and food for the developing brain,” said Clark. “We are grateful to the Shreve Memorial Library system for partnering with us to promote the development of strong reading skills at an early age.”
PoP provides a fun and educational environment for children from birth to 2nd grade. Children can visualize themselves as problem solvers and innovators in a kid-sized version of Shreveport-Bossier City. Sci-Port Program and Education Director Lou Papai said the new Children’s Library in PoP can help pave the way for the child’s future academic success and encourages parents and children to spend time together interacting in an informal educational setting.
Children can visit PoP during Sci-Port’s regular operating hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday - Saturday and Noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. General admission of $12 to Sci-Port Discovery Center includes access to the Power of Play (PoP) Children’s Museum and the Children’s Library at PoP. Patrons of Shreve Memorial Library may check out a Sci-Port pass at any library branch to cover the cost of admission (subject to availability).
About Power of Play (POP) Children’s Museum
PoP provides a fun and educational environment for children from birth to 2nd grade. Children can visualize themselves as problem solvers and innovators in a kid-sized version of Shreveport-Bossier City. Play is the work of childhood, and the power of constructive play helps children discover the world around them! The activities and demonstrations in PoP are aligned with Early Learner Development Standards (ELDS) and Grade Level Expectations (GLE) from birth through 2nd grade. PoP is a place for play, but it’s also a place for learning. PoP’s exhibits are science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) related and allow kids to explore a mirror-image of their caregivers’ world with childlike imagination and wonder. The experiences kids discover at PoP will not only make lasting, fun memories, but also pave the way for future academic success. For more information visit www.sci-port.org/pop-childrens-museum/.
