Housed at our Broadmoor Branch, the SML Genealogy Department can assist you with resources at the library and online to help you uncover your past. They also host regular classes for you to learn more about using our genealogy resources.
Our Genealogy Department provides individual instruction on using genealogy tools and databases. You can contact us to set up an appointment, or come by at your convenience. The Genealogy Department is located at our Broadmoor Branch, 1212 Captain Shreve Drive in Shreveport.

Our Genealogy Department hosts a number of classes, including a Beginner’s Genealogy Class, various classes on using the library’s databases, and other monthly specialized classes. We also regularly host meetings with area genealogy and historical organizations for you to learn more about local and family history. These classes are free and open to the public.

You can also access a number of free online resources with your library card to research your family’s history. We have MyHeritage, Fold3, Newspapers.com Library Edition, and Digital Sanborn Maps. These resources are all accessible from anywhere with a library card. If you are at the library, you can also use Ancestry.com Library Edition. Our library staff has worked with The Ark-La-Tex Genealogical Association to digitize and make available old editions of their monthly newsletter, “The Genie.” We also have newsletters from the Genealogy Computer Group (Gencom) and the Friends of Genealogy. These newsletters are available for you to borrow through our Overdrive site.
