Shreve Memorial Library and Students to Scientists founder, Ashini Modi, are partnering to present virtual science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) mentoring sessions this fall. Each session will introduce elementary and middle school students to a different STEM field and help them to conduct science fair projects of their own. The sessions will be conducted via Zoom, and registration is required to attend.
Ashini Modi is a junior at Caddo Magnet High School. A member of the Astronomical League and Shreveport Bossier Astronomical Society, she is an avid astronomer and has been conducting research in the field of astrophysics. Modi founded the organization Students to Scientists, whose primary goal is to ensure that every student has the resources and mentorship to study science. “I am extremely excited to conduct Students to Scientists library workshops with youth from our community to mentor them through the scientific method and guide them through the process of creating their very own science project,” stated Modi.
The next Zoom STEM mentoring session will be held on Saturday, December 5 at 2:00 p.m. Session II will introduce students to the field of biology. The session will include a presentation by an expert in the field as well as fun, interactive activity and quizzes throughout. Participation in the mentoring session is free and open to all students. Registration can be completed at https://bit.ly/SMLscience2.
The STEM mentoring sessions and science fair initiative is sponsored by Sci-Port and the STEM Alliance. Students will present their final science projects at a science fair sponsored by Sci-Port. Speakers and mentors for each session are provided by the STEM Alliance.
