Speaker: Sherman Houston: “Mahalia Jackson: Champion of Freedom through Song”
Sherman Houston is a resident of Grand Cane, Louisiana, and a graduate of the LSUS Master of Arts in Liberal Arts Program. He is the recipient of the inaugural Noel Thesis Award (2019).
Mr Houston has admired Mahalia Jackson’s music from an early age. In his thesis, now released as a book, he explores the wider contexts of her music, including the development of gospel and Mahalia’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. Signed copies of Mr Houston’s book will be available for purchase during the evening. Cost $10 per copy.
